Sofapaka disarm Red Berets |
Are Sofapaka back to their best form of last season? It certainly looked so Saturday when they tore to shreds Red Berets 4-0 in a Kenyan Premier League match at Karuturi Stadium in Naivasha. John Baraza scored a brace to bring his league leading tally to nine goals while Bob Mugalia and Abdi Simba added one each to emphatically announce Sofapaka’s return to the favourites list.Featuring Kenya internationals Allan Wanga and George Owino, the former for the first time, the champions were rarely troubled by the never-say-die paramilitary side. They put up a composed performance that will certainly make the likes of Tusker and Mathare take real notice. The three points pushed Sofapaka to third on the league table, their best placing so far this season. Baraza got the reigning champions going, sending Berets goalkeeper Evans Adache the wrong way from the penalty spot after Allan Situma had been brought down in the box by Nyabira Nyangicha in the 10th minute. Almost doubled the score Wanga, whose hopeful ball into the box led to the penalty incident, saw plenty of action early on. He squeezed into the danger area and played Anthony Kimani right on the goal post. But it proved too elaborate when Kimani fed Mudda Mussa for a weak shot to the keeper. Bob Mugalia almost doubled the score in the 29th minute beating Adache to the ball put his seemingly fortuitous back heel just bounced wide. It duly happened two minutes before half time when Baraza won the race for Situma’s long punt up field, rounded Gideon Ogude before feeding the charging Bob Mugalia for a rather untidy finish. Baraza got his double with a typical predatory strike, taking ruthless advantage of Red Berets’ failure to deal with Kimani’s hanging cross to head home from the near post. At three up it looked all over for Berets. But Sofapaka were not done yet and another raid led by Mugalia on the right wing freed substitute Simba to score a rare league goal with aplomb late in the game. Berets, to their credit, tried to salvage the game but most of their efforts were thwarted by Sofapaka’s defence with the rock solid Owino prominent. Fierce long range shot Their best effort of the match was a fierce long range shot from Gabriel Ndura that shaved the upright with the rarely tested Wilson Oburu in goal no where near it.
