JOHN Baraza scored 15 goals last season and shared the top scorer “Golden Boot” Award with Tusker’s Joseph Emeka. With six matches left in the current campaign, Baraza has 13 and, comfortably ahead of the opposition, looks set for glory and money yet again.
The Harambee Stars veteran holds on to his hallmark of remarkable coolness in the penalty box where he simply guides goals in. His club, Sofapaka, third on the table behind leaders Ulinzi Stars and Gor Mahia, are still well placed to defend their title. With Baraza on form, they are looking forward to more goals and a few must surely come from the “Golden Boot” Award front-runner.
The surprising runners-up in the goal count is Ezekiel Odera of the struggling KCB. The rookie has 10 and is one of only two players, so far, to have scored a hat-trick. The other is AFC Leopards ' Congolese striker Demonde Selenge
Allan Otindo of Karuturi Sports has nine goals and Goerge "BlackBerry" Odhiambo of Gor Mahia eight. A large group of players has six goals each and, in all, 149 players have scored at least once in the season.
Baraza’s title-chasing Sofapaka are away to Western Stima at Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega in the only Premiership match on Saturday. Kenya Under-20 team will be playing Lesotho at the National Stadium, Nairobi on Saturday, in a 2011 Africa Under-20 Championship qualifiers first leg match, therefore necessitating the staging of all other KPL matches on Sunday.
