Club History |
SOFAPAKA F.C’s name is derived from the Kiswahili acronym descriptive of the team’s formation. Sofapaka stands for SOTE (kama) FAMILIA (kwa) PAMOJA KUAFIKIA AZIMIO Sofapaka Football Club grew from the then existing church team of M.A.O.S ministries that was called ‘Consuming Fire’. The church team was started under the inspiration of Pastor Jimmy Carter Ambajo in the year 2002. The main objective at this juncture was to have a sporting activity for the men’s fellowship of M.A.O.S Ministries and also do sports evangelism through the team. The team prominently featured in inter-church tournaments and in 2003 the team was third overall, the winning team being Huruma Boys of Bishop Arthur Kitonga’s Redeemed gospel church. In 2004, under the inspiration guidance and sponsorship of our team president Elly Mboni Kalekwa, Sofapaka Football Club was formed. The philanthropic team president gave the young boys most of whom were street boys a chance of livelihood through football. Training at the Nairobi City Park grounds, the boys committed themselves to the team and the sport. The boys abandoned their detrimental lifestyles of glue sniffing, drug abuse, smoking cigarettes and marijuana. They became serious about football the team got the chance to play in the Nationwide league. Bandari F.C was the team that denied Sofapaka to qualify for the Kenya premier League of 2006. Bandari had only one point more than Sofapaka after the latter drew in its final match. Notwithstanding, the year 2006 was the year that Sofapaka F.C first made it into the history books of Kenyan Football. The team won the much coveted Presidents Cup (formerly known as the Moi Golden Cup) under the experiential coaching of Martin Ndagano. By virtue of winning the Presidents Cup the team was supposed to gain automatic qualification to the Kenya premier League but this wasn’t the case for Sofapaka. Being a church based team hence the slogan ‘Watoto wa Mungu’ the team was not disillusioned they prepared themselves well for the Nationwide League zone B championship. They became more determined to join the topflight Kenya premier League. Consequently the team president acquired the man known for lifting teams into the Premier league, Coach Robert Matano to bring to fruition the teams, vision. Under the diligent and no-nonsense coach and a spirited teamwork from the entire Sofapaka family, God crowned the team’s efforts to become the 2008 Nationwide Zone B champions. This victory saw the team gain promotion to play in the 2009 Kenya Premier League. |
